In his article Gary identifies 2 reasons why the Bedford rink project did not qualify for federal stimulus funding. In this regard he is correct. Why should a project receive “stimulus” funding if it is going to proceed regardless? The economy is not being stimulated by the insertion of federal funds in this case! No this project should not receive federal stimulus funding.
Our city “leaders” were brain dead to not understand that simple logic, and should never have prepositioned it as such. So if there is blame to be cast, we do not have to even look outside the city boundaries.
Now on Gary’s assertion that there was no political considerations in the federal decision! Well that one is a bit of a streatch. To suggest that the reigning government acted strictly on principle in deciding not to fund, reflects Gary’s political bias and again demonstrates Gary’s believe that we are naive. Remember– the last NS Conservative budget proposal was balanced. Only Gary believed that too. Of course there is a political consideration in every spending decision made by a government. That is why citizens have little faith in politicians.
Regarding the city switching to the Rocky Lake development. I am sure Gary’s “attacks” on the councilor involved make that likely to happen.
I was a fan of the Rocky Lake development when it first started. But it has become so mired with politicians and unanswered questions regarding volunteers versus paid managers that I have lost faith. No the city should stay clear of this one.
Barry, I am sure that you leave all readers ,not just me ,confused when you accept my suggestion that the federal funding should be cancelled on the basis that it does not qualify yet you cruiticize me for statements regarding councilor Tim Outhit being responsible for the cut funding.
I would also like to clarify your concerns regarding volunteer commitment and paid management. I have been a volunteer on this project as a voting member of the Rocky Lake board with the exception of a three month construction period when I managed the site during the excavation, foundation construction and water and sewer installation. I remained a board member, non voting, during that time and returned to voting status after the first inflation in April. I am still on the board and voluntarily monitor the continued construction for the board as a member of the sub committee on construction.I hope this restores your faith in our project because I believe the 15 to 20 million dollars that free land and combined synergies can save our tax payers certainly should bemore important than your mistrust. I invite you to sit down for a coffee to relate the very complex difficulties our board has experienced at the hands of HRM.
BY THE WAY COUNCILOR BARRY DALRYMPLE HAS BEEN AND CONTINUES TO SUPPORT OUR PROJECT AND HAS THE SAME REPRESENTATIVE POWERS OVER OUR PROJECT AS TIM OUTHIT BECAUSE WE ARE A REGIONAL ORGANIZATION BUILDING REGIONAL FACILITIES;WE JUST HAPPEN TO BE LOCATED ON THE ROCKY lAKE COMMONS.

For the record it is “Geoff” Regan and not “Jeff” Regan.
Merry Christmas everyone.
