Well I had the pleasure tonight to go to our lovely rec centre for an event and have the pleasure of watching and listening your children swearing at the tops of their lungs at the skate park.
When I addressed it with them they became very very aggressive.

Barry Dalrymple, Percy Paris, and Peter Stouffer I would say it is high time you folks take charge of this disaster we call a rec centre and take 13 cement trucks and fill in that skate park once and for all and put an end to this charade.

When residents are feeling unsafe it is up to you - our representatives to take action. Hold a referendum on closing this park and filling it in. That will do away with these rowdy and abusive teens milling around.

I won't even speak about where these children's parents are. That's a whole other topic. It's not the communities role to raise your kids folks. Take responsibility for once.

I invite comment from others on this topic. Do you feel safe? Should we press these politicians to act? We as a community need to do something before someone gets attacked.

There's an old saying that politicians should pay particular attention to.

Disobey your constituents and find yourself working at Home Depot.

The citizens of Fall River, Grand Lake, Waverley etc live here because of the natural beauty and the access to recreational activities.

Let me be blunt

No activities - new politicians...

You get my point - I hope so - it could be a short tenure

This is fantastic work by all who have inputed and particularly a hearty congratulations to the organizing committee. It goes to show that the people do have the power over elected representatives. I am proud to live in the area, as volunteers are doing a heck of a lot of work to shape the future of our community.

The Fall River Visioning committee is also making great progress on a number of different issues in the area including transit, traffic woes and timing of lights, reviewing and making recommendations on an area traffic study, development bylaws that will protect how our community is developed, trails and housing, and a whole lot more.

We all should be proud to live in a district that really cares.

Gary,

You hit the nail on the head. Everytime there is an issue in HRM, I see that the method of moving forward is a study. I am baffled at the fact that we have elected leaders who are too afraid to make a decesion. We elected them to lead our communites forward and for the greater good of all.

Instead, they want to find what the study says and then are more worried about losing their seat so they do not make a decesion and nothing happens with the problem, or a new study is requested because they wasted so much damn time on doing something in the first place.

Oh yes- I didn't realize that they were planning a surtax on high value homes. I agree Steve, the fairest way to tax is based on services, not on income. Higher incomes already pay more tax and get less benefits and reliefs. I thought they were just 'exploring' options at this stage, but I was wrong.

A system of secrecy, lack of transparency, and lack of accountability have allowed a number of our MLAs to abuse their power and spend money that most of us would consider inappropriate and some would consider fraud or theft. Over the years they personally benefited from some of their expenditures under the cover that there were no rules that prevented from doing this. It took an audit to uncover this.

LWFRA appears to have a duplicate system of secrecy, lack of transparency, and lack of accountability. The Board has said privacy laws keep them from being open and disclosing needed information (since proven Wrong). Someday (soon I hope) we will in fact get inside those secret files and I wonder what we will find.
The MLAs did not want us to know what was happening with our tax money, and LWFRA has been less than forthcoming about what is happening with our tax money.

We now know why the MLAs did not want us to know how they spent our taxes, why does LWFRA not want us to know what is happening to our taxes!!! HRM and Mr. Dalrymple you are our version of the auditor. And we want the details published!! (Privacy laws did not prevent details from being published provincially and neither should they here!)

Barry,
I can't answer that one .I don't have the bylaws and depending who you ask there remains a question as to whether ratification by HRM and joint stocks has enacted the bylaws as they were passed at the meeting.

Gary

Politicians are adept at tactics used to delay any decision making that might cost them a vote. Besides studies they also use the, "We should have a meeting." line or the, "You should start a letter writing campaign," to slow down the process.

I'll give you a classic example which was almost laughable in how it played out I will relay the following story. One time a few years back there was a meeting at Beaver Bank Kinsac school with all the stakeholders about getting funding to repave the school parking lot. The MP, the MLA, the councillor and the school board member were all in attendance at the meeting.

At the end of it all one of the elected politicians suggested to the crowd that they should start a letter writing campaign. My thoughts were to whom. All the elected area politicans were at the meeting. They could get together without the help of letter from the crowd and come up with a solution was my thought. The letter writing campaign is just another name for "having a study."

It would be a breath of fresh air if a group of politicians took a bold step and made a decision to actually help their constituents without having a study, having another meeting or waiting to get some letters. You make a great point about useless studies.

As an example of how taxpayers' money can be wasted on studies I have reproduced a press release from February 5, 2001 about a real live study that might just fall into the type of study to which you refer in your article.

"FOR BROADCAST USE

A group of researchers is studying the health of Gaelic culture in Nova Scotia, and it wants to hear from people active in the Gaelic community.

Consultant Mike Kennedy and his research team are preparing an inventory of Gaelic events, resources and organizations.

Tourism and Culture Minister Rodney MacDonald, whose department commissioned the study, says their findings will help Nova Scotia develop strategies to strengthen the presence of Gaelic language and cultural expression.
